Bridge to Community College Program

Technology skills are essential in today's workplace. Yet, many people still lack access, putting them at a widening educational and economic disadvantage. Technology, in isolation, will not change the economic lives of low-income families. BATEC administrators believe educational opportunities that combine encouragement, a community of peers, and technology skills training can change the economic lives of low-income families. Community-based organizations (CBOs) are able to provide local and accessible solutions. CBOs provide strong support to their surrounding community through a wide range of services such as advocacy, housing assistance, community organizing and workforce development. CBOs are ideal conduits through which information resources can be channeled to individuals.

Since 2005, BATEC has been partnering with its community college partners and local area CBOs in the Bridge to Community College Program. This program provides adult learners with two credit-bearing technology courses combined with English and Mathematics tutoring.  Additionally, career counseling and/or academic support are provided to the enrolled students to encourage full college matriculation. Prior to the end of the second course, participants visit the community college to register to continue their education as matriculated students. These visits included tours of the campus, overviews of available programs of study, financial aid opportunities and placement testing.
