Our history

Traditionally, educators focus on the academic learning outcomes within courses using paper and pencil assessment instruments. These may be driven by their own educational experience or the textbook that they are using. These outcomes may not necessarily reflect or translate into industry standards, relevant skills and knowledge as recognized by local businesses.

Summer Institute 2002 - August 15th and 16th

Over 40 educators and business representatives convened at Bunker Hill Community College to examine relevant curricula from the BATEC partner schools, catalog course outcomes, and begin to develop a common language for communicating knowledge and skill acquisition across the three levels. This process was led by Dr. Peter Saflund from the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies (NWCET), principal of the national skill standards project for information technology.

This information will be used to create a “Roadmap of Opportunities”, a mapping framework that will provide navigational guidance, facilitating movement and advancement of students throughout secondary, community colleges, and the University in a flexible, systematic and cohesive manner with multiple entry and exit points, workforce development, certificate and degree options. It will demystify the options and provide for “breaking down walls” that separates levels of education and courses of study, providing connections in an educational system that currently seems so disjunct amongst the various institutions.
